Pipeline LACT are generally located in the field on a lease and hooked up to a delivery pipeline. Traditionally they are supplied by a supply or storage tank that has high and low level switches. When the high level switch is activated the pump on the LACT skid is turned on. Once an acceptable BS&W value is achieved the flow meter will begin measuring the amount of fluid that passes through. As the oil flows a sample of a given volume is taken and stored in the sample container. The LACT controller will record volume, temperature and oil quality measurements. Once the low level switch is activated the pump is turned off. This type of system can be fully automated.
